Idling may be unavoidable for emergency vehicles, but the process wastes fuel and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Since December 2009, NAFA Member Brian Barkley, CAFS, and the County of Simcoe (Midhurst, Ontario) have been working in partnership with Fleet Challenge Ontario, Demers Ambulance, and Canadian Extreme Climate Systems Ltd. to help combat the problem of idling through the creation of a prototype ambulance that is part of a police and EMS vehicle idling reduction demonstration project.

The NAFA Fleet Management Association recently learned of an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) decision regarding the purchase and distribution of tax-free fuel sold to state and local governments. The IRS is reportedly taking the position that tax-free fuel purchased by a local governmental unit, such as a county, cannot be distributed to or used by another governmental unit, such as a city sheriff
